Revolutionizing retail analytics: Torfs and Lytix’s Data Lakehouse success story

Intro

In a market where competitiveness is evermore increasing, leveraging insights resulting from data has countless times proven to be a competitive advantage for Retailer Torfs.

Lytix and Torfs cooperate on the integration of sources into a Data Lakehouse. This Data Lakehouse is used to feed the need for insights. A hybrid architecture of on-premises technologies and the Azure Analytics stack results in a short time-to-value for new data domains. Lytix is always improving the existing Data Lakehouse in terms of Data Quality, Insights and Automatization resulting in a low TCO.

Leveraging Best-Of-Breed solutions and the need of a Data Lakehouse

Schoenen Torfs focusses on using best-of-breed solutions that support them in their operational activities. Each of these applications are very strong on one specific business process resulting in an added value. As different applications are optimised for their line of business, the need for a central data repository and more data integration rises. It quickly became clear that Torfs was in need for a Data Lakehouse.

With its various product solutions, Lytix offers a comprehensive approach to Data & Analytics, Reporting, and AI-fuelled applications. The more business is moved to a data-driven environment, the greater the need for data governance and quality checks that the enterprise must mitigate. The development of scalable analytics applications is a major growth area for Torfs, and one in which they are already well supported by Lytix.

Businesses and industry groups traditionally relied on reporting systems that were complex to manage. Increasingly, business wants the ability to quickly answer complex analytical questions without the involvement of IT”, says Stijn De Knop, CFO/CDO at Torfs.

Stijn concludes: “We are happy to cooperate with an organization like Lytix that can support us in delivering analytical use cases for the entire enterprise. We strongly believe that innovative technologies can be a major competitive advantage and that organizations that use innovative solutions have a faster time to market and therefore a much greater competitive advantage.

Power BI supported by a Modern Data Platform

Torfs has made the strategic decision to rely on the Microsoft stack for answering their use cases. The thrusted on-premises data warehousing solutions offer Torfs trust and stability in day-to-day reporting. Data is extracted, cleaned, and transformed into a business-friendly layer of information. Automated processes are put in place to provide the right information to the right person at the right moment in time.

The Azure cloud is leveraged to support in analysis that have a less predictable workload. This both includes supporting AI scenario’s, storing information for future added value in a Data Lake as well as exchanging information with different stakeholders. PaaS components are typically only billed by usage, allowing Torfs to quickly evaluate the newly implemented use cases by its TCO.

The broad range of functionalities of Power BI enable Torfs as its reporting and analytics platform. The tool provides a governed reporting platform for the whole organization; from management reporting, willing to see the high-level KPIs, to people in the shop willing to know their sales performance.

Data Challenges

As a shoe retailer, Torfs is up for some challenges. It is Torfs’ strategy to further mine for insights in data, implement this knowledge in business processes and leverage AI and Data Science in streamlining operational processes. Torfs is a good example of gaining an added value by turning data to insights. With broad knowledge in different domains, Lytix supports Torfs in this strategy, in the past few years, now and in the future.
